Clear writing and critical thinking are essential to students' success in school and in life. WriterCoach Connection brings trained volunteers into the classroom to give students at all levels of ability the one-on-one help they need to master these skills.
WriterCoach Connection (WCC), a program of Community Alliance for Learning, trains and coordinates volunteers to help secondary school students write and revise their classroom English assignments. Currently over 550 volunteer writing coaches are working with 2,000+ students in Oakland, Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito and Richmond.
With individualized feedback and encouragement, WCC coaches strengthen student writing skills; reinforce teacher lessons; challenge students to think more deeply; and, encourage students, building their confidence as writers.
Coaches commit to 1-2 hours a few times each month and meet during the school day to work one-on-one with students in their English classes.
“It's the most satisfying work I’ve done in the [public] schools,” says a WCC volunteer. Teachers say, "the writing improves dramatically" and "I have seen firsthand how coaching has made them blossom as writers."
